Gay Marriage Causing God to Strike!

The article in The Huffington Post written by Ed Mazza brings up the topic of gay marriage. The author talks about how a Baptist preacher claims that God will strike something worse than Ebola because of the legalizing of gay marriage in Virginia. The Baptist preacher, Ron Baity, from Winston-Salem, North Carolina is angry over the decision of making gay marriage legal. He believes that the justice system went over something that is a direct violation of the Bible. He speaks on the idea that if people think God is just going to wait, sit, and watch everything happen; the answer is a no. He believes that God is going to come forward with repercussions of the issue and make Earth a hell whole. Unfortunately during a sermon, Ron compares gay marriage with the cities destroyed by God in the bible and the feelings that America should not be surprised about the plagues. Baity wants everyone to understand that you cannot turn your head away for God, or God will turn his head away without giving any attention. The author, Ed Mazza ends the article by stating that the Baptist preacher called for the prosecution of gays.

Ron Baity uses good points in supporting his argument on God willing to strike back because of gay marriage being legalized. Ron Baity forgot to look at the whole picture of how God treats everyone and how the Bible can represent different things in life. Although, Ron Baity does have understanding of the Bible and a better understanding of God’s beliefs; he should still love everyone because God will deal with others sins himself. After reading an article by Dominique Robbins, she perfectly says that God states that getting saved has nothing to do with gays. If a gay is allowed to get saved then why would God punish America for making gay marriage legal. She also states that God has more grace for gays and lesbians than he does for heterosexuals. She also says, that to have God in your life all a person needs is a honest heart, honesty before God, and sincere desire to obey the Bible. Giving these three points can helped show that God should not punish America or even Virginia for accepting gay marriage as legal because in God’s eyes gay or lesbian marriages were already legal.

Note Taking (Essay 2)

Note Taking

Note taking for a long time has been the barrier of make it or break it. Some people are mentally gifted and do not have to write notes. These type of people are auditory learners.  Auditory learners are able to listen to a lecture or someone speak and afterwards, can remember what that person said or what that lecture was about. There are not many auditory learners; they are in fact visual learners or kinesthetic learners. These are people who must see images to learn and have to have practical lessons to learn. I am a kinesthetic learner.

It is very important for people like me to have good note taking strategies. In classes like math, I usually look for examples I can write in my notes to help me rather than just listen and right what the professor has shown us on the board. For other classes like, this one and science I find it important to maybe shorten words if there are a lot of notes to take, and I also use acronyms such as math I use “PEMDAS” which stands for parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, and subtract to make it easier. If I have to remember like a phrase or how something works I might have a little fun with it, and make a tune in my head or a beat from my favorite songs to rhyme it to. If it’s a new subject, I would write the subject in all caps in the middle of the paper and underline it so I know this is the subject we are talking about. I also use bullets, numbering, and letters to keep my notes in order.

In classes, like English and history I become a more visual learner because these two classes are more reading and writing. In English class, when the teacher gives readings or just describes the novel to the class; I visualize images of the novel. In history, when the teacher talks or explains past times I visualize the wars being described. Being a visual learner is not always for everyone, but I feel like when reading I need to become a visual learner. When taking notes in this classes, I draw diagrams, charts, pictures, and timelines to help visual. On the side of these things, I would put little side notes that need to be added to them.

Being a kinesthetic learner, I have to see images and have practical lessons to help me learn. But there are other ways to learn like auditory and visual. Auditory learners are the type of people who can memorize the lessons the teacher has taught. They are also gifted in the fact that, they do not have to take notes. But note taking has been a barrier of make it or break it.

Old Dominion University is a beautiful school in my opinion, but it was not my first choice. My first choice was to attend North Carolina Central University. After talking to my parents and really putting in a lot of thinking of how much I would have to pay for school; Old Dominion University looked like a pretty good choice. The thing that really made me fall in love with Old Dominion is how easily the people became a family. Ever since I was young, I dreamed of going to college for a better learning than my parents were offered. The place I always dreamed about was a semi big school that had faculty that cared for their students and looking back on that dream Old Dominion University fit everything.

My motivation on higher learning came from looking at how my parents struggled without going to college. I would always tell myself that I plan on not living the life they lived because it was not always the best for everyone. I can also remember as a young child them saying “Angel you’re going to college no matter what…” and I would just smile. Going to college made my parents the happiest they have been in the longest. The fact that their happy lets me know I am doing the right thing in life and I plan on keep doing to right thing for them to be proud.

Long-Term Goals-Year

  1. I want to have at least 30 hours of community service before the year is over.
  2. I want to go to Virginia Beach for a day.
  3. I want to make a connection with a faculty member.

Achieving yearlong goals are a little easier than short term goals because you have more time. Goal one can be achieved through the year by just contacting offices or organizations. My working for these organizations can help me get community hours. A way to achieve going to Virginia Beach is just planning a day trip with friends maybe before an exam, so we do not stress too hard about the exam. Last I could make an connection with a faculty member by just getting to more involved with things, so my name can be known.

Short-Term Goals- Semester

  1. To make the Dean’s List.
  2. To get more involved with the clubs offered at Old Dominion University.
  3. To become more aware with Old Dominion’s area.

Accomplishing these three goals will not be an easy task. To make the Dean’s List I will need effect study habits. I will also need to take effect notes in order to study well for the exams. I will also need to go to activity hour in order to sign up for clubs. The next step would be to go to the meeting for each club to say that I am involved with that club. The last goal I can accomplish by just going out more and experiencing all the different areas with a group of friends.

So far throughout the semester I have been to at least 4 study halls and at least 8 are required. I know I need 4 more,  but I just feel like study hall is only needed when I need help on revising my essays. As a writer I need to write a essay with a lot of mistakes, so I know when revising what is my strong and weak points in writing. I personalty use the study hall as another peer vision, just so I know all the mistakes are gone.

The midterm grades come out last weekend and everybody was a little scared. I did not want to open up the email at first, but I finally did and was really surprised by the score. I had received an overall score of 3 to pass my University 150 midterm. I was surprised because it did not take me long to write the essay at all.  I knew there was a few mistakes, but the ones I missed were not that many. Over all I am just happy that I passed the midterm because now I know in my head that I can pass my final.

Mid-terms were turned in a week ago on different types focused on throughout the three weeks of school. Through those few weeks of school, I noticed that some of the topics were not what I was given. So, I made sure to pay close attention because the topics being talked about my be given to me this time. Little did I know, when I sat down to take my mid-term my three topics given to me were the ones we worked on in class the most. I was happy to say that I paid attention in class and I feel like I did a good job on my mid-term and will score a 3 to pass.

The purpose of an article review is to get a better understanding of an article someone else wrote. It took maybe 35 minutes to write the essay. It took my two days to revise the essay because I went to the study for corrections on the summary and argument.
